A trajectory that melds rich cultural heritage with modern innovation.

In the realm of luxury fashion, Tarun Tahiliani’s legacy spans nearly three decades, marked by a trajectory that melds rich cultural heritage with modern innovation. Born into a family deeply embedded in India’s military and engineering spheres, Tahiliani’s upbringing was a fusion of Western influence and the vibrancy of post-independence India.

This intersection laid the groundwork for his pioneering venture, Ensemble, founded in 1987 alongside his wife Sailaja. As the first multi-designer boutique of its kind in India, Ensemble not only introduced luxury retail to the nation but also served as a platform for burgeoning designers, reshaping the landscape of Indian fashion.

Tahiliani’s journey into the realm of design was further propelled by his pursuit of education, culminating in an associate degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Armed with newfound technical prowess, he embarked on a creative odyssey, establishing the Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in 1995, a nucleus of sartorial innovation nestled in the heart of Delhi. His designs, characterised by intricate detailing and a fusion of tradition with contemporary flair, garnered international acclaim, leading to historic milestones such as showcasing at Milan Fashion Week in 2003, a testament to his global influence.

The New Man

Tarun Tahiliani has been designing for men since the inception of the studio. Even though initially it was limited to grooms, Tahiliani pushed the idea of creating a new genre for the man of today who is well-travelled and a man of the world yet is very much rooted in his culture and is not afraid to embrace and represent it.

The team along with the designer worked with traditional silhouettes and modernised the techniques by changing the fusing, and transforming the kurta through the introduction of the small yet very crucial element—a cuff. The achkan was updated by shedding the bulk upfront and incorporating a centre-back dart for a slimmer cut. The studio introduced the practice of making toiles for menswear in muslin and masters worked fastidiously, folding, nudging, and pleating for better proportion.

Tahiliani played with the width and length in his sketches and laboured over buttonholes. In the new swatches that landed on his table, there were fabrics, appliqué, and top-stitch options. Structured fits, buttoned shirts, cummerbunds reimagined as belts, plunging cowl necklines, and open jackets replaced tight and restrictive ones—blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative tailoring.

“Tasva emerged onto the menswear scene, redefining celebratory attire with an emphasis on accessibility and style.”

It was then in 2021 in a groundbreaking collaboration between the esteemed House of Tarun Tahiliani and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd (ABFRL), Tasva emerged onto the menswear scene, redefining celebratory attire with an emphasis on accessibility and style. Tailored for the discerning gentleman seeking both comfort and sophistication, Tasva presents a modern reinterpretation of groomswear, prioritising impeccable quality and expert craftsmanship. With a commitment to innovation, the brand seeks to revolutionise traditional menswear, offering a fresh perspective that resonates with the contemporary generation.

From ivory and pastels to resplendent golds and rich reds, ‘Sol’ embraces a spectrum of hues, manifesting in draped dresses, jumpsuits, structured bodices, embellished jackets, and structured separates for women. Meanwhile, men’s attire features bandhgalas, waistcoats, modern sherwanis, and signature TT dhotis, among other refined silhouettes. Each ensemble in the collection serves as a harmonious fusion of modern tailoring and a profound reverence for India’s rich cultural tapestry.

Designing Beyond Boundaries

In addition to his renown as a distinguished designer of bridalwear for both men and women, Tarun Tahiliani has ventured into the realms of architecture and interior design, showcasing his discerning aesthetic sensibilities. His portfolio boasts an array of meticulously crafted boutique hotels, resorts, restaurants, and holiday homes, alongside the recent establishment of a dedicated division for bespoke interior and architecture projects.

This unwavering passion for design permeates through every facet of his brand, evident in the meticulously curated spaces of his stores across major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Drawing inspiration from Indian art and architecture, Tahiliani’s designs pay homage to the intricate details of Mughal miniature paintings and an array of textiles, with a special emphasis on fabric as the central element. This synthesis of tradition and modernity gives rise to an ambiance characterised by the essence of ‘India Modern,’ defining Tahiliani’s distinctive design language.

His aesthetics strive to bridge the gap between the tradition and modernity in luxury fashion. This narrative finds its culmination in his inaugural book, “Tarun Tahiliani: Journey to India Modern,” an ode to his life’s work, encapsulating the evolution of a designer, a brand, and a cultural icon, poised at the nexus of tradition and innovation.

Through meticulous research and introspection, the book traces Tahiliani’s quest to redefine the narrative of Indian fashion, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. From pioneering concepts like the iconic concept saree to his relentless pursuit of couture weightlessness, Tahiliani’s journey mirrors the essence of India’s cultural renaissance, an enduring legacy of artistry and imagination.
