Crafting Artistry
Woodlabs is a design studio based in Bangalore, working closely with vernacular practices and providing life to ideas with expert craftsmanship.
Woodlabs draws its inspiration from everyday life and cultural heritage. Founded by Abhirup Dutta, an architect and product designer based in Bangalore, and Deeptashree Saha, an interior designer, and stylist hailing from Calcutta, Woodlabs is a homage to artisanal values and a slower, more intentional way of life.
Abhirup Dutta's inspiration stems from his grandfather's renowned "karkhana," a workshop celebrated for repairing and retrofitting components of Satyajit Ray's film cameras. On the other hand, Deeptashree Saha brings her extensive experience in art, architecture, and the aesthetics of an evolving vernacular setting to the table. Together, they lovingly craft each piece with a generous amount of time and care.
The Tamoshi Mez – A Bar Unit
The Tamoshi Mez – A Bar Unit is an embodiment of nature's storytelling, designed for the Museum of Art and Photography in Bangalore. Inspired by the layered burn of trees, this piece celebrates the transformative beauty of charring wood by combining Japanese techniques of charring wood with artisanal craftsmanship, it merges form and function, offering practicality while retaining its connection to the original concept. Granite stone as the tabletop and brass knob details add to the beauty of the unit.
“This meditative journey unveils the wood's hidden history through grain, knots, and patterns.”
Beyond furniture, its extraction of the symbol of nature's rhythms makes it an artistic statement and a functional addition to any space. The meticulous process of revealing the wood's inherent character ensures that every unit is not merely a product, but a narrative of the environment it originated from.
Material Palette
The studio’s commitment to quality is reflected in the selection of materials used for this project: Solid Teak wood, Solid Acacia wood, Ply, Teak Veneer, Granite stone for the tabletop, and Brass for the knob details. Each material is chosen to complement the charred aesthetic while ensuring structural longevity and a premium tactile experience.
